When Yes is not an option!

27 09 2007

Joyce Meyer quoted “I am not responsible for your joy, I am only responsible for mine. What is the point of sinking inside to please others? Sometimes you just have to say no.”

This is something I have learnt to agree with. As you get older, you get grumpier, right, or do you just get wiser? Personally I think it’s a bit of both! Isn’t it funny how we strive to have the perfect job with the great house to go with it, but doesn’t that just bring added pressure to promise people more of ourselves and with it grey hairs?

Popularity of churches on Facebook

26 09 2007

Just thought I would undertake a very simple and random search on Facebook to see how many groups are associated with the following keywords:

Elim – 119 Groups

AOG – 43 Groups

Calvary Chapel – 110 Groups

So there you have it, Elim wins by a margin!

24 hour availability

25 09 2007

My broadband connection is currently down, the support helpline has told me the connection could be down for a few hours and that a good book might be what is called for! But this made me think, what would my life be like if my relationship with God is like a broadband connection; how empty would I feel?

An intermittent connection is not what I want with God and thankfully he provides a constant link through the Lord and the Holy Spirit. Like a broadband connection there needs to be human interaction and it is clear that it is not a one-way feed. I feel guilty when I have not read the bible and undertaken prayers when I have time, and there is no ‘buts’ or excuses for this. So without further ado, where did I put my NLV?

Building A Road Map!

24 09 2007

Building a road map as a Christian has made me realise that there are not enough hours in the day. My road map goes something like this:

  1. Make my Commitment
  2. Read the whole Bible
  3. Join a Cell group
  4. Get Baptized
  5. Become part of a Church
  6. Get my wedding vows blessed.
  7. Rest

I feel this is the agenda that God has set out for me and I must not deviate from this. Ironically it has seven stages, which is not dissimilar to God’s road map to creating the universe, although my road map falls well short of God’s initial agenda.

I often hear procrastination being mentioned, but I know God will guide me to the next stage when he feels that I’m ready for it, I feel that I must stick to the path. I am at stage two at the moment, which in a two month period, has so far been a fantastic rollercoaster journey. Here’s to the next four stages!

Google Trends in the UK

20 09 2007

As a 21st century Christian, I consume data like cups of tea and I earn a crust surfing the net all day. When I like to educate myself or look at Christian merchandise, I find the web seriously lacking! Because Christianity is not a commercial entity it means that there is not a professional market out there to satisfy my craving. Sure there are many amateurish attempts, hobbyist and even the odd ebayer who provide information, news and products, but with the exception of the e-commerce Wesley Owen, where is everybody?!?

With this in mind I thought I would delve a bit further, a basic search on Google found that there are around 2M websites in the UK which make reference to the Bible, this figure is 6 times greater than websites with a reference to Koran. But taking a further look at the data it would appear that more users are searching for information on ‘Islam’ or ‘Muslim’ than that of Christianity (see the graph). Why then are so many people fixed on false gods?
Trend for what UK users are searching for

As Christians, we need to start using the web to develop our knowledge, such sites as Facebook allow Christian communities to develop discussions, there needs to be more Christian e-shops (this includes clicks and mortar) selling merchandise other than bibles in order relate to all Christians, young and old. We need to show the almighty God that we can adapt to change and not become set in our content ways.
